Despite years of peace, Bosnia and Herzegovina is still scarred by war. The Open Society Fund–Bosnia and Herzegovina works to restore a sense of community and future among the country's young people through programs that promote civic engagement. We focus on activities that advance social inclusion, overturn school segregation, and facilitate long-term education reform through initiatives such as the publication of new textbooks that reject ethnic stereotypes.
The fund also seeks to build a local civil society that can give communities an active and effective role in guiding development policies. We use local engagement to advance good governance and have been a leader in promoting Roma inclusion and empowerment. The fund has assisted in monitoring local governments to ensure they address issues of importance to Roma, provided legal training for Roma, and helped Roma participate in local elections that brought candidates from their communities to office.
Our justice efforts focus on the judiciary by using strategic discrimination litigation and helping strengthen the ability of vulnerable groups to understand and claim their rights to equality and non-discrimination.
