Mirnaib Hasanov’s project documents the dual existence that members of the LGBT community in Azerbaijan are often forced to live. His photographs focus on Seimur, an Azeri gay man who hosts his own television show where his performances are viewed largely by a LGBT audience. By documenting Seimur both on and off-stage, dressed in women’s clothing and at home with family, Hasanov captures the separate lives he must delicately balance on a daily basis.
Since 2004, Mirnaib Hasanov has worked as a photographer for MCCI. In 2011, Hasanov was elected chairman of the Azerbaijan Photographers Union. His work, “Долгое эхо войны (Long Echo of the War)” was shown at the 2012 international FotoFest in Chelyabinsk, Russia and he has contributed to several photo publications including, “20 Sketches on Baku” (2011) and “Two Photo-Talks on a Tragedy” (2010). Hasanov is the recipient of the 2006 Caspian Sea of Friendship festival gold medal. He graduated from the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts in 1989.
