Mexican Drug Policy Reform Network
The drug policy situation in Mexico at present is marked with an increasing militarization which has been supported by the United States' Merida initiative. In response, the Angelica Foundation and Mexican Allies have created a Mexican Drug Policy Reform Network, CUPIHD. This network consists of individuals, groups, and organizations working on drug policy, public health, and human rights. Their efforts are directly or indirectly linked to HIV and human rights.
As a first step in this common effort, the Angelica Foundation will use the opportunity presented by the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City to bring human rights, drug policy, and HIV issues to the attention of authorities, other conference participants, and the general public through engaging media. Activities will also include: a Satellite Session entitled "Harm Reduction, HIV and an Integral Approach to Drug Policy in Mexico," the hosting of a Global Village Booth which will provide space for drug policy organizations to come together during the conference, and support to Latin American speakers who have submitted abstracts to the conference.
