Drug Policy in Colombia: Towards a More Balanced Approach

The purpose of the grant is to deepen understanding of anti-drug policies in producer countries. The focus will be on the effectiveness of a more balanced approach to drug policy in Colombia.

In particular, the main goals of this project are to determine:

i) The effectiveness and costs of alternative development programs in reducing the supply of drugs;

ii) The main determinants of the effectiveness and long run sustainability of alternative development programs;

iii) The effectiveness of policies aimed at curtailing the supply of chemical precursors and destroying laboratories used in the production of cocaine in reducing cocaine production at the regional level in Colombia.

Finally, the main goal of the conference is to release the book on drug policy in Colombia and to disseminate the main policy implications of the different chapters of the book to the general public, the media, policy makers, and presidential candidates in Colombia. The conference will be held during the beginning of March 2010. The authors of the different chapters will present the main results and policy recommendations.
