Advancing Drug Policy Reform in Latin America
The purpose of the grant is to support the joint collaboration between Washington Office on Latin America and Transnational Institute to promote more effective and humane drug policies in Latin America. Within the project, these organizations seek to help shape the drug policy debate about appropriate legislative reforms at the level of national governments, incorporating human rights and harm reduction perspectives into the debate and stimulating it by pointing out good practices and lessons learned from across the region in areas such as proportionality of sentences, prison reform, and the status of the coca leaf in the international conventions. The project activities include research and briefing papers on examples of positive reforms that have taken place elsewhere and by organizing informal meetings of judicial experts and practitioners from across the region.
