A grant sponsoring two sessions at the July 2009 World Professional Association for Transgender Health conference in Oslo, Norway, addressing medical-legal issues affecting transgender persons. The first session dealt with the rights of transgender persons in prison and pretrial health settings, including continuing gender reassignment and hormone therapy. The second session dealt with the legal preconditions for changing gender identity, including the requirement in many countries that trans persons undergo surgery and/or sterilization in order to change their gender status (or, in some cases, their legal name). This grant was cofunded by the Public Health Program’s Law and Health Initiative and Sexual Health and Rights Project.
