Advocacy for the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Information in Africa
The University of Pretoria Centre for Human Rights works in cooperation with the Office of the Africa Union's Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Information to ensure ratification of the Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. The Charter will contribute to the implementation and utilization of the right of access to information, media freedom, and freedom of expression in Africa. This is done through strategic training interventions conducted by the Special Rapporteur and by developing several tools, including guidelines for an effective access to information law, a model access to information law, a model Open Government Policy Document, and implementation guidelines. An annual regional report on the status of the right of access to information in Africa will be published and a dedicated website created and maintained by the Special Rapporteur.
