The Open Society Foundations U.S. Programs aims to address core threats to open society, including increasingly punitive national security policies, decreasing government transparency, entrenched structural racism, and growing incarceration rates.

  • ACLU Capital Punishment Project 2002

    A renewal grant to support media campaign on the death penalty.

  • ACLU Northern California 2002

    A grant to support the Campaign Against Racial Profiling, which includes the "Driving While Black or Brown" Campaign and work to combat racial profiling since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

  • Adam Ortiz 2002

    Adam Ortiz will work with sponsoring organiztaion, the ABA Juvenile Justice Center, towards abolishing the juvenile death penalty.

  • American Bar Association Fund for Justice and Education 2002

    A grant to support juvenile justice reform and development of a strong network for juvenile defense on the national and state level.

  • American Friends Service Committee 2002

    American Friends Service Committee will complete a recidivism study and print the results in pamphlet form for use in public education, fundraising, and advocacy efforts.

  • Amy Bach 2002

    Amy Bach will produce a series of articles and a book about widespread injustice in this country's court system.

  • Angela Davis 2002

    Ms. Davis will write a book about how prosecutorial power and discretion have perpetuated many of the inequities and flaws in the criminal justice system.

  • Bard College/Episcopal Social Services 2002

    A grant to Bard College/Episcopal Social Services provides bridging start-up funding for the Bard in Prison higher education program at Eastern New York Correctional Facility.

  • Benita Jain 2002

    Benita Jain will establish a legal support model responsible to immigrant communities by supporting organizing efforts to reform detention/deportation laws and addressing immediate legal needs of detainees transferred to locations around the country.

  • Brennan Center for Justice 2002

    A grant to implement a 2-year pilot project to seed, encourage and strengthen holistic and community-oriented advocacy by defender agencies.
