The Open Society Foundations U.S. Programs aims to address core threats to open society, including increasingly punitive national security policies, decreasing government transparency, entrenched structural racism, and growing incarceration rates.

  • Abubakr Muhammed Karim 2005

    Karim will undertake an effort to replicate a model re-entry program run for and by men and women who were previously incarcerated, former substance abusers, or diversion sanctioned probationers.

  • Advancement Project 2005

    A grant to develop a strategic reentry plan for high incarceration/high return neighborhoods of Los Angeles in preparation for the city's anticipated reentry initiative.

  • AIDS Housing of Washington 2005

    A grant to support production of the next edition of "From Locked Up to Locked Out: Creating and Implementing Post-Release Housing for Ex-Prisoners."

  • Alexander Ndaula 2005

    Ndaula will work with nonprofit organizations, universities, and other groups to provide support to immigrants who are detained in the rural South.

  • Annie Sundberg and Rickie Stern 2005

    Sundberg and Stern will complete and distribute the wrongful-conviction documentary The Trials of Darryl Hunt.

  • Bard College on Behalf of the Bard Prison Initiative 2005

    To support the expansion of the Bard Prison Initiative's Model Campus Network and democracy curriculum in New York State and to develop a replication plan for other targeted states.

  • California Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice Foundation 2005

    A grant to investigate the causes of wrongful conviction and wrongful execution in California.

  • Cascade Center for Community Governance 2005

    A grant to retain a development consultant for its North Charleston, South Carolina, Civic Justice Corps site to develop a funding strategy targeting local foundations, corporations, and the Department of Corrections in South Carolina.

  • Communications Leadership Institute 2005

    A grant to train indigent defense reform leaders to create and implement effective communications campaigns in targeted jurisdictions.

  • Communities United for Action, Power and Justice 2005

    A grant to train formerly incarcerated people and their families as organizers, and forge collaborations among economic justice and criminal justice advocates on a grassroots campaign for parole reform in Georgia.
