The Open Society Foundations U.S. Programs aims to address core threats to open society, including increasingly punitive national security policies, decreasing government transparency, entrenched structural racism, and growing incarceration rates.

  • A Better Way Foundation 2008

    A grant to provide general support.

  • Active Voice (Community Initiative Fund of San Francisco Foundation, fiscal sponsor) 2008

    A grant of $50,000 over 15 months to support the use of the feature-length film, The Visitor, as an education and advocacy tool on immigration detention and deportation in Muslim, Arab, and South Asian communities.

  • Air Traffic Control 2008

    A grant to provide general support to the Air Traffic Control Education Fund, which helps musicians use their talent and high profiles to effect social change by connecting them to activists, organizations, and issue campaigns.

  • Alexandra Smith 2008

    Alexandra Smith will monitor New York State prisons compliance with new legislation diverting prisoners with serious psychiatric disabilities from solitary confinement.

  • American Civil Liberties Union Capital Punishment Project 2008

    A grant to support the Mitigation Mentoring Initiative of the Capital Punishment Project.

    A grant to support the Collaboration on Government Secrecy, an academic center devoted to government transparency, freedom of information, and the study of government secrecy in the U.S.

  • Amnesty International USA 2008

    A grant to support the Counter Terror with Justice Campaign to build and mobilize, through grassroots education and advocacy, a movement of concerned individuals and communities dedicated to securing human rights protections in U.S. national security policies.

  • Arab American Institute Foundation 2008

    A grant to support Yalla Vote, a civic education and nonpartisan voter engagement project to increase civic engagement of the Arab American community in the 2008 election and beyond.
