This briefing paper looks at the legal issues and history of the trial of Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui. Ngudjolo was acquitted trial before the ICC on December 18 of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during an attack on Bogoro village in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo in February, 2003. A second militia leader, Germain Katanga, has also been on trial at the court over the same attack.
The judgment was the second to be handed down by the ICC, after its verdict in the trial of Thomas Lubanga in March. Details of the ruling can be found on our trial monitoring website, www.katangatrial.org.
