Electric Yerevan: Lessons for Freedom of Assembly and Civic Culture in Armenia

Provoked by a hike in electricity prices, Armenians have been taking to the streets for over two weeks to denounce corruption and demand solutions to the country’s economic and social problems. A panel of experts will discuss the culture of protest in Armenia and the legality of the government’s response to the recent demonstrations, as well as the questions of governance, rule of law, and human rights that are at the core of the protest.

Speakers

  • Mikael Danyelian is the founding member and chairman of the Armenian Helsinki Association.
  • Larisa Minasyan is the director of the Open Society Armenia Foundation.
  • Svitlana Valko is a documentation coordinator of the Ukraine office of the International Partnership for Human Rights and member of the IPHR monitoring mission to Armenia.
  • Simon Papuashvili (moderator) is a project coordinator at the International Partnership for Human Rights.
  • Iskra Kirova (welcome and opening remarks) is a policy analyst at the Open Society European Policy Institute.
