Promoting Open Society in South Africa

The Open Society Foundation for South Africa (OSF-SA) invites expressions of interest from South African organizations to undertake projects that promote the values, institutions, and practices of an open, non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic society for consideration for its next grant cycle. 

Eligibility Criteria

Only expressions of interest that fall within the following focus areas will be considered.

Human Rights and Governance

Access to Justice; Access to Information; Public Participation; Public Policy

Criminal Justice

Corruption; Policing; Prisons; Courts; Crime and Safety; South-South Criminal Justice Reform

Media

Media Freedom and Access to Information; Media Policy; Content and Skills Development; Information and Communication Technologies; and Community Media

Foreign Policy

South Africa in Africa; South Africa’s place and role in a changing global architecture 

Guidelines

Prospective applicants should submit an Expression of Interest outlining the project in no more than 700 words. This should be sent as an attachment via email and must be submitted in English.

The criteria for successful expressions of interest are their relevance to OSF-SA’s priority focal areas, attempts to raise standards, and promote new ideas in their respective fields. 

Each expression of interest must include:

  • A heading with the name of the project; name of the applicant organization; contact person; and telephonic and email contact details.
  • Total project amount; amount being sought from OSF-SA, amount sought / received from other donors; total organizational core and project budget/s amount.
  • In 700 words or less: 

    1. A summary of the proposed project. What do you do and how? What problem are you trying to address? What are your specific project objectives? (no more than 500 words).
    2. Background information about the organization applying: organization and registration type, background, and oversight structure (no more than 200 words).

Submission of Expression of Interest Deadlines

This grant cycle will proceed in two stages.

In the first stage, expressions of interest will be accepted during a fixed window that closes on September 5, 2013.

If the expression of interest submitted by your organization is reviewed positively, OSF-SA will inform you by September 19, 2013, and invite your organization to submit a detailed proposal which will be due for submission by no later than October 7, 2013.

In the second stage, these proposals will be processed and presented to the Board of OSF-SA for review, final award, and selection during November 2013. Successful applicants will be notified thereafter.
