Pastoralists Speak

Over 90 percent of meat consumed in Eastern Africa and more than 50 percent of the milk produced comes from pastoral herds. Pastoralism directly supports up to 20 million people (nearly 10 percent of the entire population) in the region.

Yet many policymakers in Eastern African countries dismiss pastoralism as “backwards,” “uncivilized,” and “outdated.” The Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa supports vibrant discourse on “change from within” by strengthening pastoralist associations in Eastern Africa to influence national and regional policies to integrate pastoralists’ interests.
