Catharine Stimpson

Catharine R. Stimpson is University Professor and dean (emerita) of the Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University. From 1986 to 1992, Stimpson was dean of the graduate school and vice provost for graduate education at Rutgers University. While on leave from Rutgers from 1994 to 1997, she directed the Fellows Program at the MacArthur Foundation in Chicago. She has chaired the New York State Council for the Humanities, the National Council for Research on Women, and the Ms. Magazine Board of Scholars.

Stimpson has also served as president of the Modern Language Association and the Association of Graduate Schools and is a member of the board of directors of several educational and cultural organizations. Her writings include a novel and over 150 monographs, essays, stories, and reviews. Stimpson was educated at Bryn Mawr College, Cambridge University, and Columbia University. She has also won Fulbright and Rockefeller Humanities Fellowships.
