In February 2008, the European Court of Human Rights reaffirmed the European Convention's ban on deporting people to countries where they are at risk of being tortured.

In Saadi v. Italy, the court ruled unanimously that no circumstances, including the threat of terrorism, can justify exposing an individual to the genuine risk of torture or ill-treatment.

The Open Society Justice Initiative joined with 10 other human rights and anti-torture groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International in hailing the ruling.
