Wendy Ewald

One Year

Working in partnership with the Quebec Labrador Foundation, the Tshikapisk Foundation, and members of the Innu community, Wendy Ewald repatriated photographs made by Innu children in 1969 and distributed--locally and provincially--new images made in collaboration with the Innu nation. The project, titled “Innu Public Image Project,” explores self image and public image of Innu culture, then and now, with the goal of changing public policy toward the Innu people. In consultation with community members, Ewald displayed the old and new photographs as banners, both in the community and in the provincial capital, St. John. Ewald worked with the Innu children in 1969 and was a pioneer in using creative collaboration as the basis for photographic self representation.
