Yuan Yuan is a 2016 Open Society Presidential Fellow. Yuan holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and a bachelor’s in history and mathematics-economics from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia.
While studying at Chicago, Yuan worked at the International Human Rights Clinic on issues of access to medicine and patients’ rights in China, deportation of Haitians, child migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, among others. She also worked as a student attorney at the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights Clinic. Yuan has held internships at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance in Tunis, Tunisia; the Migrants’ Rights Legal Clinic in Ramat Gan, Israel, working with asylum seekers who had fled Sudan and Eritreans; Management Centre Europe in Brussels; and Amnesty International in Atlanta. In the summer of 2011 she was a leadership resident at the Harpswell Foundation Leadership Center for Women in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Yuan is fluent in Mandarin and Shanghainese.
