Behrouz Afagh has been head of journalism for the Middle East and West Asia at the BBC World Service since January 2011. He is editorially and managerially responsible for the BBC’s TV, radio, and online services in the Arabic, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Persian, Turkish, Urdu, and Uzbek languages. Afagh joined the BBC in 1984 as a radio journalist in the Persian service and has worked in many different roles at the BBC since then. He set up the BBC Central Asian Service in 1994 and the BBC Persian TV channel in 2009. Afagh was born and brought up in Iran and studied at Tehran University and then at the University of Surrey in Britain. He has lived in Britain since 1978 and has reported and written extensively on Afghanistan, Iran, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
