Ivan Sigal is the executive director of Global Voices, a nonprofit online global citizen media initiative, and supports similar projects around the world. Sigal is a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, where he studies digital storytelling and online communities. He is a media producer who works on long-term photography, multimedia, and writing projects.
He is the author of White Road (Steidl, 2012), based on eight years of photography and writing about Central Asia and Russia. Sigal was a Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace, writing about digital media technologies and their effect on conflict. He also held many positions over a 10-year period at Internews, working on dozens of media projects across the former Soviet Union and Asia, on topics such as conflict, transitional societies, humanitarian information, broadcast and Internet media infrastructure, and freedom of expression. He has lived, worked, and traveled in over 80 countries. Sigal is a graduate of Williams College and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
