Joel Campagna is senior program officer for media and information for the Open Society Foundations Arab Regional Office (ARO) in Amman, Jordan. He oversees ARO’s grant making in support of independent media and freedom of expression in the Arab region.
Prior to joining the Foundations, Campagna directed the Middle East program for the New York–based Committee to Protect Journalists, overseeing the organization’s research and advocacy for the Persian Gulf, Mashriq, Maghreb, and Turkey. At CPJ, he lead the organization’s response to some of the world’s most high-profile press freedom cases related to the U.S.-led war on terrorism, the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Prior to his work at CPJ, Campagna was a consultant to the Middle East division of Human Rights Watch from 1993 to 1996, conducting research in Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria.
Campagna has a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in Middle East studies/political science from Fordham University.
