Mercedes Melon is a senior legal officer at the Open Society Justice Initiative.
Melon has two decades of experience as human rights lawyer conducting litigation as well as legal research and advocacy. Prior to joining the Open Society, she worked as a legal adviser with the Spanish human rights NGO Rights International Spain (RIS), and as a legal researcher with the leading Palestinian human rights NGO, Al-Haq. Before working for these groups, Melon practiced law in Spain for over a decade, both in private practice and as a legal aid lawyer. She was also involved as an activist in different social movements and as a volunteer development worker with several civil society organizations in Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
Melon received her law degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela and her LLM in international criminal law from the Irish Center for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
