Sarah Klaus, director of the Open Society Early Childhood Program, leads a team of specialists who develop and implement the Foundations’ global early childhood portfolio.
The program improves services and policies that impact young children, particularly minority and disadvantaged groups, and builds capacity of early childhood professionals. Since 2006, Klaus has expanded its original focus in Central Eastern Europe and Eurasia to include Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
In 1994, Klaus helped launch Step by Step, the Foundations’ flagship early childhood program, and in 1999, the International Step by Step Association, a network established to support early childhood professionals in Central Eastern Europe and Eurasia. She served as the association’s executive director from its inception to 2006.
Klaus holds an MA in developmental psychology from Columbia University Teachers College and a BA in Russian studies from Brown University. She is currently pursuing a doctor of education at the Institute of Education in London.
