Stephen Hubbell is acting co-director of the Open Society Fellowship Program, where he jointly oversees the program’s strategy, budget, governance, and personnel. In addition to managing the fellowship initiative, he oversees the Open Society Internship for Rights and Governance, a global human rights and governance internship for graduate students in public policy–related programs. He serves on the Senior Leadership Group for the Open Society Foundations and on its Committee on Grant Making.
Previously, Hubbell was senior public affairs officer with the fellowship program and led the program’s work on food security and climate change in Africa. He joined the Open Society Foundations in 2008, the year the fellowship was created, after 20 years as a journalist and editor. He has served as senior editor at Metropolitan Books, Middle East correspondent for the Nation, and senior editor of Harper's Magazine.
He received his BA in government from Wesleyan University.
