Strategic human rights litigation seeks to use the authority of the law to advocate for social change on behalf of individuals whose voices are otherwise not heard.

This 2018 report provides summaries of over 60 cases undertaken by the Justice Initiative to defend and strengthen human rights, together with short commentary and analysis from our staff. This work supports Open Society's wider efforts to build tolerant and vibrant democracies, whose governments are accountable to their citizens.

Our litigation work deals with discrimination, freedom of information, citizenship, freedom of expression, national criminal justice, deaths in custody and torture, economic justice, international criminal justice, corruption and the human rights impact of counter-terrorist policies.
