Journalists Ridgeway and Casella will document and report on the use and abuse of solitary confinement in U.S. prisons, jails, and youth facilities, increasing public awareness of this pervasive but hidden practice.

Ridgeway, a veteran journalist with more than 50 years of experience as an investigative reporter, is currently the senior Washington correspondent for Mother Jones, a post he has held since 2006. For almost three decades, he was a staff writer/ Washington correspondent for The Village Voice, where he wrote a weekly political column and feature articles on national and international subjects. He is the author of over 20 books, and his freelance work has appeared in The Economist, Parade, Harper's, The Nation, George, Natural History, Audubon, The New York Times Magazine, The Guardian, and Al Jazeera.

Casella, a freelance writer, editor and publishing consultant, has spent the majority of her 25-year career managing independent, mission-driven media projects and editing books, articles, and electronic media. For 10 years, she was the publisher and editorial director at The Feminist Press at the City University of New York. She also served as managing editor of Thunder’s Mouth Press, an independent publisher of progressive nonfiction and culturally diverse fiction. Her work has appeared in MotherJones.com, The Guardian, and The Crime Report, and other outlets.
