Consumers are facing new opportunities and challenges in the growing online digital environment. Traditional ideas of consumer ownership are changing; consumer protection is uneven; and there is a lack of communication about the rights, interests and concerns of consumers. The digital environment is also raising questions about a fair intellectual property regime that fosters access to knowledge, an area of Consumers International's work that is supported by Open Society Foundations.

Consumers International will host a global summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which will bring together CI members from across the globe to discuss these changes, challenges, and opportunities. Through its "Consumer Representation in the Information Society" initiative, CI hopes to create a coordinated consumer voice that can shape an advocacy agenda on issues such as access to broadband, network neutrality, internet governance, access to information, online privacy and freedom of expression. This initiative fits in to their larger goal of ensuring that communication networks like the internet, and the work exchanged through them, are accessible, affordable, reliable and safe for all.
