Moving Walls 22: Group Exhibition on Surveillance

The Open Society Documentary Photography Project is soliciting proposals for our next exhibition, Moving Walls 22 / Watching You, Watching Me: Photography in an Age of Surveillance. The exhibition will take place from November 4, 2014, to May 2015 at Open Society Foundations–New York.

Moving Walls 22 / Watching You, Watching Me explores the intersection of photography and surveillance. We are seeking projects that use documentary photography and photo-based approaches to explore the culture, concept, mechanisms, and consequences of surveillance.

Watching You, Watching Me will be the first thematic exhibition presented as part of the Open Society Foundations’ Moving Walls exhibition series. Since 1998, Moving Walls has showcased over 175 photographers in 21 group exhibitions—at our offices in New York, Washington, D.C., and London—that align with the Open Society Foundations’ mission to advance human rights and social justice.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Photographers, artists, and curators who bring expertise and new insight to an issue. (Note: There are 5–6 exhibition slots, each with enough wall space for approximately 10–20 images. Whether proposed by a photographer or curator, submitted projects will be considered for one of the 5 or 6 exhibition slots.)
  • Projects that use photography or photo-based practices to reflect on the theme of surveillance in a unique and compelling way.
  • Projects may be part of a larger, ongoing body of work, but the Moving Walls exhibit will be curated from work that already exists (funds will not be provided to shoot new work).
Purpose and Priorities

We are seeking photo-based projects that explore surveillance-related issues from a variety of perspectives. We encourage applicants to interpret the theme broadly. To see a list of possible topics, please download the full application guidelines. We welcome a wide range of photo-based approaches, including documentary photography, conceptual documentary, archival images, curated or aggregated projects, and projects that use photography and/or associated metadata as the basis for data visualization, info-graphics, or information art. Projects may be contemporary, or include historical material. Five to six projects will be selected.

We will cover the cost of: printing/framing; $2,500 participation fee; travel cost reimbursement/coverage to attend the opening reception and related events (attendance required); and return shipment of photographs.
