Civil society organizations in Latin America that work on issues of human rights, transparency, and citizen security are beginning to look to new media technologies to complement more traditional forms of activism and information sharing. To begin to bridge this gap, the Open Society Latin America and Information programs brought together some 30 grantees with 10 experts in web development, digital media, and design for a workshop on how NGOs can best implement new technologies to more effectively carry out their work.
For two days in Santiago, Chile, last November, participants discussed the usefulness of a variety of tools, techniques, and processes that can help make civil society organizations more effective and efficient in their communications and advocacy strategies.
Notes from the breakout sessions and additonal workshop information are available (in Spanish) on the Taller de Tecnologia y Sociedad Civil website.
The workshop was organized by Open Society Foundations consultant David Sasaki, who maintains the Informacion Civica website, and hosted by the Center for Human Rights at the University of Chile.
