Host organization: Youth Rise Texas
Kandace Vallejo will lay the foundation for a multiracial, youth-led statewide movement to reduce incarceration, detentions, and deportations in Texas.
Vallejo is Founding Director of Youth Rise Texas, an Austin-based organization that cultivates the next generation of leadership in the struggle against mass incarceration and immigrant criminalization. Previously, she spent 12 years supporting the immigrant worker rights movement, working alongside the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, the Student/Farmworker Alliance, and Workers Defense Project. She holds a masters in education from the University of Texas at Austin, and was a Kellogg Food and Community Fellow at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. She chairs the Board of Directors at Jolt Texas, and was formerly a board member of Just Harvest USA. A published author, she has contributed book chapters to Be the Change: Teacher, Activist, Global Citizen and AK Press’s Uses of a Whirlwind.
