Luis Trelles

Luis Trelles will produce a series of print, web-based, video, and audio pieces that describe the complications and contradictions surrounding the use of the federal death penalty in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.

Journalist and documentary filmmaker Trelles began his career as a freelance cultural reporter for the San Juan Star, Puerto Rico’s now-defunct English language daily. As the writer and co-director of Elusive Pandemic, an investigation of public health issues facing undocumented Mexicans throughout the United States, the documentary was broadcast on HITN, New York City’s largest Spanish language public television station. A recent MFA graduate of Columbia University’s School of the Arts, his work has appeared in El Nuevo Dia (Puerto Rico’s newspaper of record)and TUTV Canal 6 (Puerto Rico’s public television station). He currently collaborates with Centro de Periodismo Investigativo (Center for Investigative Journalism) and other outlets. He received his BA in Philosophy from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras.
