Mass deportations in France. School segregation in the Czech Republic. Fingerprinting children in Italy. Firebombing homes in Hungary. Throughout Europe, Roma face appalling levels of discrimination and violence incited in part by politicians using Roma as scapegoats in order to win popular support.

France’s recent deportations of Roma have captured headlines worldwide and forced some European policymakers to confront their failure to extend rights and protections to Roma communities. The panel will hear from a former EU parliamentarian, a filmmaker, and a human rights advocate and explore the Open Society Foundations’ efforts to improve the situation of Roma in Europe.
