Pedro Noguera is the Judith K. Dimon Professor of Communities and Schools at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Boston, Massachusetts. He discussed specific strategies schools may utilize as an alternative to zero-tolerance discipline policies and also about the role of social capital in preventing school violence.
Noguera's research focuses on schools' responses to social and economic forces within the urban environment. He has engaged in collaborative research with several large, urban school districts and is the author of a number of articles including: Finding Safety Where We Least Expected it: The Role of Social Capital in Preventing Violence in Schools, and the forthcoming Confronting the Urban: How City Schools Can Respond to the Forces of Social Inequality. Noguera was a K-12 classroom teacher for several years and continues to teach part-time in high schools.
