The Open Society Foundations hosted a discussion of democracy in Pakistan with Asma Jahangir, Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, UN Commission on Human Rights, and Founder, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

Jahangir is a human rights activist and lawyer who has spent much of her career defending the rights of women, children, and religious minorities in Pakistan and abroad. In 1992, she became Advocate of the Pakistan Supreme Court. In 1998, the UN Commission on Human Rights appointed her as Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Arbitrary, and Summary Executions.
