Judith Browne, a senior attorney at the Advancement Project in Washington, D.C., discussed the links between school discipline policies and the juvenile justice system and provided highlights from the Advancement Project s two most recent reports. The project provides assistance to grassroots and civil rights organizations in the development and implementation of legal, political, public education, and communications strategies to address racial justice issues.

Browne is the co-author of the report Opportunities Suspended: The Devastating Consequences of Zero Tolerance and School Discipline and author of Derailed: The Schoolhouse to Jailhouse Track. At the forum, she also discussed the Advancement Project s study of the Miami-Dade County public school system, in which they compared outcomes from four schools that employ very different disciplinary policies, and the lessons learned from the study.

This event is part of Forging Open Society: Generating Ideas, Partnerships and Solutions, forums convened by OSI-Baltimore to encourage community leaders with diverse perspectives to craft solutions to challenges facing the Baltimore region.
