Effective Criminal Defence in Europe: Advancing beyond Stockholm

This conference organized by the Open Society Justice Initiative, in collaboration with JUSTICE, the University of Maastricht, and the University of the West of England, launched the report of a major project looking into the requirements of effective criminal defense within a Europe where criminal justice systems are increasingly cooperating on matters relating to justice and home affairs.

The report, Effective Criminal Defence in Europe, addresses the following:

  • requirements of human rights and best practice;
  • performance of nine countries, eight of which are members of the EU;
  • proper role of the European Union in setting standards for the protection of criminal defendants.
