For the first time, grantees from the Global Supplementary Grant North America and the Doctoral Fellows programs were invited to a joint spring conference at the Open Society Institute offices in New York City.  As PhD candidates at universities across the United States and Canada, participants formed cross-programmatic ties and learned from the work of their peers from diverse academic backgrounds.  Networking was also high on the agenda, especially as grantees are in their first to sixth year of study.

Contributors to the conference included key players from the world of the open access movement: Jonathan Emmons of Connexions, a leading organization in the field of the open education movement; Carolina Rossini, a Brazilian-born fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University, and Noel Selegzi, director of OSI’s Youth Initiative. They provided insight into current trends and debates, as well as outlining practical opportunities for publishing academics to share their work with scholars worldwide.

Emil Dzhuraev, pursuing a political science PhD at the University of Maryland, convened a panel of his Global Supplementary Grant peers to discuss issues of cohesion, competition, and conflict in stable political environments.  Columbia University scholar Otgontugs Banzragch presented on the labor market and education in Mongolia. This was followed by a practical workshop by Jenifer Burckett-Picker, director of PhD studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, who shed light on the PhD process and best practices regarding the Institutional Board Review for social science research.

In addition, the conference was joined by Rupert Skilbeck, Litigation Director, and Kelly Askin, Senior Legal Officer, with the International Justice Program of the Open Society Justice Initiative, who both gave a concise introduction to the diverse work of the Program.
