In September, the OSI Public Health Program sponsored a workshop on monitoring access to health services in Armenian prisons and police detention centers. The workshop took place in Tzahnadzor, outside of Yerevan, and included participation from advocates who monitor prisons throughout the country.

The workshop was led by Dmytro Groisman of the Vinnytsya Human Rights Group, an expert on prison health and a member of the OSI Law and Health Initiative Technical Advisory Committee, and Vanu Jereghi, executive director of the OSI-funded Moldovan Institute for Human Rights and a leading human rights lawyer in Moldova.

During the workshop, experts shared best practices in monitoring prison health conditions and facilitated the creation of a tool that will be used in future monitoring visits. The prison monitors also learned about Moldova’s experience in successfully imbedding harm reduction into prison health services.
