One Year After the Uprising: Human Rights in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan has undergone a tumultuous year. The overthrow of the Bakiyev regime in April followed by ethnic violence in the South tested the stability of the state.  Over the last year, there has been progress in addressing some important human rights issues, including freedom of the media.  But particularly in the aftermath of the violence in the South, some issues have flared up, such as ethnic discrimination, torture and other cruel and inhuman punishment, and significant violations of fair trial standards.

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the second Kyrgyz revolution and the formal presentation of the report of the International Independent Commission (the “Kiljunen Commission”) on the events in the South, the Open Society Foundations invite you to a roundtable discussion with four of Kyrgyzstan’s best-known human rights activists.
