OSI Regional Alumni Conference 2008: Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic

In the second annual Regional Alumni Conference, Scholarship Programs alumni from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia met in the historic city of Krakow.  

Under the theme of Educational Issues in the Technological Age, alumni from the Open Society Institute Chevening, Hospitality, Undergraduate Exchange, and Supplementary Grant Programs ranging back as far as 1986 participated in seminars, held presentations, and engaged in lively discussions on topics relevant to the contemporary educational setting.

Guests

  • Ewa Kulilk-Bielinska, Deputy Director of the Stefan Batory Foundation, Warsaw, opened the event with a welcome speech and an update on foundation activities.
  • Dr. Alek Tarkowski, Coordinator at the Creative Commons initiative in Warsaw, delivered a thought-provoking and accessible introduction to the work of Creative Commons. 
  • Jarosław Lipszyc, President of Modern Poland Foundation, Noel Selegzi, Director of OSI Youth Initiative, and Jan Marković of the e-Learning Centre at the Krakow AGH University formed an innovative panel discussion on open access.  
  • Dr. Sara Hennessy, Researcher, University of Cambridge, England, gave a keynote speech, “Innovative Uses of Technology to Increase Learner Participation Inside and Outside the Classroom,” which closed the conference.

  • Mr. Jacek Sypniewski (Soros Supplementary Grant Program 1986), Poland: “Interactive Games as a Learning Tool.”
  • Dr. Zdenka Panovska (Oxford Hospitality 1997), Czech Republic: “Opportunities for Women in the Czech Education System since 2000.”  
  • Dr. Aleš Vlk (UEP 1994), Czech Republic: “Case Study of a Tertiary Education Reform in the Czech Republic.”
  • Pavol Kohut (UEP 2002), Slovakia: “My Story and Adrian Adorono” (short film).
  • Krzysztof M Piskorski (Soros Supplementary Grant Program 1986), Czech Republic: “Interactive Games as a Learning Tool.”
  • Dr. Joanna Zofia Minksztym (Cambridge Hospitality, 1994), Poland: “Flowers are for Girls: Gender Roles and Youth Celebrations in Poland.”
