OSI hosted a panel discussion with Tony Judt, director of the Remarque Institute, New York University, to mark the publication of his new book, Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945 (Penguin Press).

Publisher's Weekly describes Judt's book as "the best history we have of Europe in the postwar period and not likely to be surpassed for many years." Based on research in six languages, covering thirty-four countries across sixty years, and using a great deal of material from newly available sources, Postwar integrates international relations, domestic politics, ideas, social change, economic development, and culture high and low into a single narrative.

In addition to Judt, panelists included:

  • Ian Buruma, Henry R. Luce Professor of Human Rights and Journalism, Bard College;
  • Jan Gross, Norman B. Tomlinson 16 and 48 Professor of War and Society, Princeton University.

Leonard Benardo, Regional Director at OSI, was the moderator.
