This five-day online event aims to bring together several thousand individuals from NGOs, civil society, security and defense practitioners, leading political and military figures, think-tanks, academics, and journalists to contribute ideas to help build the policies that will shape our future.

The Security Jam features online keynote contributions from world leaders, including the following:

  • Kai Eide, United Nations Special Representative to Afghanistan
  • Josette Sheeran, Executive Director, United Nations World Food Program
  • Kenneth Roth, Executive Director, Human Rights Watch
  • Anne-Marie Slaughter, Director for Policy Planning, US State Department
  • Carl Bildt, Foreign Affairs Minister of Sweden
  • Paul Collier, Oxford University, author of The Bottom Billion
  • Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Former Secretary General of NATO

Ten forums will address issues from climate change to relations with Russia and China, to human rights, piracy, Afghanistan, development, and crisis management, among others. The Open Society Institute, a cosponsor of the event, will be hosting a session on the intersection of security and human rights, entitled “How Do We Reinforce Civil Society Efforts?”

The results of the Jam will include key recommendations on how to make the world a safer place. They will be presented to the leaderships of the EU and NATO, among others, at an official event in April 2010.

Conference participants can log on from anywhere once they are registered, and can dip in and out of sessions at their convenience. To participate, please register online beforehand at www.securityjam.org.
