Co-presented by OSI-Baltimore and the Creative Alliance, and curated by former Baltimore Community Fellow Paul Santomenna, the Views of Justice documentary series aims to spark dialogue through timely, provocative films with in-depth panel discussions regarding criminal justice.
October 19: A Justice That Helps (Shefsky, 2000) 19-year-old Andrew Young was murdered by 18-year-old Mario Ramos. Mario’s parish priest, Father Bob Oldershaw, and members of the community rallied around Mario and his family, not to defend what he had done, but to defend his humanity. Their actions changed everything. A rare and controversial bond grew between the families. The story offers an approach to justice beyond confrontation. Panel discussion after the film includes Lauren Abramson, Executive Director, Community Conferencing Center; Madeline Harrington, daughter of murder victim; and Bonnita Spikes, Baltimore Community Fellow and wife of murder victim.
November 30: A Sentence of Their Own (Barens, 2001) While her husband faced a felony conviction and a seven-year prison sentence, Becky and their two sons were left to contend with the aftermath, “doing time on the outside.” An inside view of the impact of our growing use of incarceration on families and communities. Panel discussion after the film with Margaret Chippendale, Manager, Child Advocacy, Girl Scouts of Central Maryland; Kristi Slawinsky, Leader, Girl Scout Troop 7140, Beyond Bars Program; Amanda Oliver, Member, Girl Scout Troop 7140, Beyond Bars Program; and Joseph E. Williams, Executive Director, Children Having Incarcerated Parents, Inc.
