The rights of women with disabilities in the Middle East and North Africa are often overlooked in broader discussions about human rights, women’s rights, and disability rights. Too often, their needs are sidelined or ignored. Over a dozen countries in the Middle East and North Africa have now ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: What does this mean for women with disabilities?
The Open Society Foundations host a discussion on this issue with Ola Abu Al Ghaib, Palestinian women’s and disabilities advocate, and Judith Heumann, disabilities expert for the Obama Administration.
Ola Abu Al Ghaib raises the profile of issues affecting women with disabilities in the Middle East with government stakeholders and civil society partners by engaging women with disabilities directly in debates. Judith Heumann, appointed to the Department of State, leads efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy to promote the rights of persons with disabilities internationally and ensure the needs of people with disabilities are addressed.
