Former OSI Fellow Elizabeth Neuffer Dies in Car Crash in Iraq

Boston Globe reporter Elizabeth Neuffer was killed on May 9 in an automobile accident north of Baghdad, Iraq. Killed along with Neuffer, who was covering the post-war situation in Iraq, was her translator, Waleed Khalifa Hassan Al-Dulami.

Neuffer was the author of The Keys to My Neighbor's House: Seeking Justice in Rwanda and Bosnia (Picador, 2001), which she wrote with support from an OSI independent project fellowship. The book was praised for its unflinching description and analysis of the ethnic-based atrocities committed in both countries and the subsequent efforts to punish those responsible through UN-sponsored war crimes tribunals. According to Publisher's Weekly, "This comprehensive study lends an immediacy to these two conflicts and the vicissitudes of the growing movement for international justice."

Neuffer, 46, had worked for the Globe since 1988. She received numerous awards throughout her career, including the Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation in 1998.

OSI President Aryeh Neier expressed his condolences to Neuffer's family on behalf of OSI, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the death of Elizabeth Neuffer, a passionate and articulate journalist who for so many years sought to make the world understand the importance and complexity of efforts to establish culpability for crimes against humanity. Her leadership and contributions will be greatly missed."
