George Soros Pledges an Initial $4 Million for Quake Relief in Haiti

NEW YORK—The Open Society Institute’s first grant to support the international relief effort in Haiti will fund four organizations currently doing life-saving work on the ground.

Médecins Sans Frontières, Save the Children, CARE, and Catholic Relief Services will receive one million dollars each. OSI made these donations at the request of our Haitian foundation FOKAL.

Guided by FOKAL, the Open Society Institute intends to play a leadership role in the country’s redevelopment. This initial support will help provide immediate emergency care for disaster victims. FOKAL will spearhead the next phase of OSI’s involvement.

Soros has previously given more than $50 million to support projects in Haiti including urban revitalization in Port-au-Prince, public libraries, community water programs, and helping thousands of Haitian entrepreneurs secure micro-credit loans.
