OSI Arts and Culture Program Offers Central Asian Cinema Collection

The OSI Arts and Culture Program has prepared a DVD collection of Central Asian cinema. "Two Epochs of National Self-Determination in Central Asian Cinema: The '60s and '90s" contains two sets of films, feature and documentary. Both sets contain 10 films—five made during the Soviet times, and five made since independence—that are emblematic of each Central Asian Republic.

The countries represented in the collection are Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. OSI commissioned a Central Asian cinema expert, Gulnara Abikeyeva, to bring together this DVD collection.

The Arts and Culture Program is offering the collection free of charge to parties interested in cinema and Central Asia, and who are committed to informing the public along these lines. OSI requests that the films be shown free of charge and, if possible, with a platform for discussion of the films. Where applicable, the films should be accessible to individuals with a relevant research or educational agenda.

Due to the limited number of DVD sets, please contact OSI with a brief description of your organization and proposed use for the DVDs. Primary targets include North American and European film associations/festivals/archives, cultural centers, libraries, universities. Please note that OSI will not distribute the collection to individuals for personal use.

Each film is subtitled in both Russian and English.

Please contact acnp@osi.hu regarding the Central Asian DVD collection.
