Over 100 Organizations Call for Release of HIV-Prevention Activist

The International Committee for the Release of Maksim Popov called upon several U.S. government agencies, multilateral institutions, and international donors to support the release of Uzbek HIV-prevention activist Maksim Popov from prison. Over 100 organizations, including the Open Society Institute, have signed the open letter.

Before imprisonment, Popov served as the director of the nongovernmental organization IZIS in Uzbekistan, where he provided counseling, training, anti-drug education, and direct services to at-risk populations in Uzbekistan. He is currently serving a seven-year sentence for his HIV-prevention efforts.
