Developments Concerning the Question of the Observance by the Government of Myanmar: Report of the Liaison Officer a.i.

  • Date
  • March 2005

The Liaison Officer a.i. is continuing to receive complaints from individuals alleging they have been subjected to forced labor, or from representatives of such persons. Often these individuals are in fact complaining on behalf of a larger group of persons or a community subjected to forced labor.

On the basis of all the information available to him, the Liaison Officer a.i.’s general evaluation of the forced labor situation continues to be, as presented previously to the governing body, that although there have been some improvements since the Commission of Inquiry, the practice remains widespread throughout the country, and is particularly serious in border areas where there is a large presence of the army.
