Healing the Crisis, a publication from the Public Health Program, analyzes the current state of public health in a region that has been buffeted in recent years by war, economic decline, and political paralysis.
The eight countries and one UN-administered region (Kosovo) covered in this report are slowly stabilizing, but now face daunting social problems that were ignored during the previous decade of wrenching post-communist transition. In particular, according to the report, the countries and territories of South Eastern Europe urgently need to tackle problems created by the near collapse of health systems. The report includes recommendations for policy makers seeking to address public health issues, arguing that good health for people living in this region will be crucial to ensure enduring peace, economic growth, and stability in general.
Besides OSI, other organizations involved in preparing the report included the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the UK Department for International Development, and the United Nations Children's Fund Regional Office for CEE/CIS and Baltic States.
